Malcolm in the Middle fans are curious about the whereabouts of actor Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, Malcolm’s younger brother, in the show after the show’s revival. Unfortunately, Sullivan will no longer return to reprise his role. Another actor is set to portray Dewey.
So, lets explore the reason behind Erik Per Sullivan not returning to the series.
Here’s what happened to Erik Per Sullivan, Malcolm in the Middle’s original Dewey
Erik Per Sullivan has retired from acting.
Dewey was a key cast member in Malcolm in the Middle, which ran from 2000 through 2006. It concluded on Season 7 as its TRP ratings began to decline throughout its run, leading to its cancellation.
However, after almost two decades, the sitcom is set for a revival, with most original actors returning except Sullivan. This is because the actor retired from the profession back in 2010 and also did not participate in any of the show’s reunions over the years.
After the sitcom ended, Sullivan didn’t immediately quit acting. In 2006, when the sitcom was in its final season, he appeared in the children’s television series, Come on Over. He also voiced Mino in Arthur and the Invisibles. His last project appears to be a teen-crime-drama movie titled Twelve.
In a 2024 conversation with Malcolm France, Jane Kaczmarek, who played Dewey’s mother, Lois, shared an update on Sullivan’s current endeavors. She revealed that he retired from acting due to a lack of interest in the profession. Therefore, he pursued a different career path. She said that currently he is a student at “a very prestigious American university” and pursuing a degree in Victorian literature.
Reflecting on Sullivan’s retirement from acting, she said, “I admire it because so many people think being in show business is the greatest thing in the world. It’s not for everyone.” Currently, Sullivan is 33 years old. He has been replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark in Malcolm in the Middle’s revival show.
