Wilmer-Hutchins High School classes canceled for the rest of the week following shooting

A shooting incident that left four students wounded at Wilmer-Hutchins High School has prompted school officials to cancel classes for the remainder of the week.

Chaos erupted at the school, located at 5520 Langdon Road in southern Dallas County, following the sound of gunfire that sent students scrambling for safety around 1 p.m.

Dallas schools Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde announced the closure during a news conference held shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

“You don’t ever just get used to this,” she said.

Elizalde said the district will provide mental health resources for students and staff needing assistance coping with the event.

While the nearby elementary school will continue with normal classes on Wednesday, Elizalde said additional security measures, including the presence of law enforcement officers, will be implemented there.

While details about the victims’ conditions were not immediately available, Elizalde confirmed that four students had been transported to local hospitals.

The shooting, which occurred nearly a year to the day after a similar incident on the same campus.

The Tuesday incident resulted in a massive response from local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Elizalde noted that in addition to local police, troopers from the Department of Public Safety and agents from the FBI and ATF were present at the scene.

The shooting has also caught the attention of state leadership, with Gov. Greg Abbott reaching out to Superintendent Elizalde to offer support and resources.

“Our hearts go out to the victims of this senseless act of violence at Wilmer-Hutchins High School,” said Governor Abbot. “I offered support to the school district families, students, and staff, and to provide law enforcement with the tools they need to arrest the criminals involved and bring them to justice.”
