Yellowstone’s ‘1923’ Kills Off 7 Characters and a Horse Before Finale — But Who Is Still Alive?

Yellowstone‘s 1923 continues the bloodbath with a total of seven characters — and a horse — dead before the season 2 finale.

During the Sunday, March 30, episode, five characters were killed off, which came after Pete Plenty Clouds’ (Jeremy Gauna) death from a shootout with Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane). Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) was shot by strangers who worked for Banner (Jerome Flynn) while Runs His Horse (Michael Spears) was killed by Renaud (Sebastian Roché). The priest also killed Marshal Kent before being murdered by Teonna (Aminah Nieves).

Elsewhere in the episode, Paul (Augustus Prew) and Hillary (Janet Montgomery) froze to death while trying to help the pregnant Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) travel to find the Dutton home in Montana. The fictional mass casualties come ahead of 1923‘s two-part finale, which will pick up as the Duttons — Jacob (Harrison Ford), Cara (Helen Mirren) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) — face the loss of Jack as their ranch continues to be attacked.

1923, which premiered in 2022, is a Yellowstone prequel that follows a generation of the Dutton family in 1923 during Prohibition, drought and the early stages of the Great Depression. Yellowstone originally became a hit when it debuted on Paramount in 2018 and has since inspired spinoffs such as 1883, 1923 and The Madison.

Paramount+ What has helped make Yellowstone such a cultural phenomenon is the show’s commitment to taking risks — especially with its onscreen deaths. The hit series, which premiered on Paramount in 2018, followed the fictional Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana. Many viewers came for Kevin Costner‘s portrayal of family patriarch John […]

Creator Taylor Sheridan has previously discussed the dedication that goes into telling authentic stories on screen.

“Because it is so hard, physically, on the actors, on the crew, I feel like the shots look earned. And because Paramount trusts me and gives me the time to go shoot 10 to 14 days for a television episode, we can treat it like a movie, and it looks like a movie,” he told Deadline in January 2022. “We can take the time to rehearse it and light it and build these set pieces. And if I call them and say, ‘I need two helicopters in one day,’ they just go, ‘Alright.’”

He added: “At the end of the day, to go to some of these locations where most people have never been, where you’re opening up a new world, and all of these places or characters in the story, to me, it’s fascinating.”

Since Yellowstone debuted in 2018, the story of the Dutton family has had enough potential to inspire six spinoffs (and counting) to add to the Paramount Network roster. Yellowstone focuses on a powerful family that runs the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. Amid their success, the ranchers must deal with attacks coming from […]

Sheridan has since expanded his filmography with original shows including Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness and Tulsa King. His commitment to gritty storytelling has earned him praise from major A-list actors looking to appear in his new projects.

For now, though, fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to see how season 2 of 1923 wraps up — and whether there’s a chance of a third season in the future.

Season 2 of 1923 airs Sundays on Paramount+.
