Young bull rider dead at 24 after tragic accident

WHARTON, Texas — Bull rider Dylan Grant has died after suffering injuries during a rodeo event Thursday night at the Wharton County Youth Fair Xtreme Bulls, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association said. He was 24.

Grant, whose death was confirmed Friday morning by PRCA, was injured in the second round of the competition in Texas after being thrown from a bull in the arena, PRCA said. Grant was then stepped on by the animal, ABC News reported.

Emergency medics responded and stabilized him in an ambulance before taking him to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, PRCA said.

“This is a tragic loss for our sport,” the PRCA said in a statement. “We send our thoughts and prayers to Dylan’s loved ones and the entire bull riding community.”

Grant, originally from Wyoming, began his PRCA career in 2018 and officially joined the association as a cardholder in February 2024. He competed in several PRORODEO and Xtreme Bulls events across the country, PRCA said.

In 2021, while riding for the University of Wyoming, Grant claimed the bull riding title at the Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo.

The University of Wyoming Club Baseball team offered its condolences to the former rodeo student athletes.

“From everyone in the Wyoming Baseball program, our thoughts are with Dylan’s family, teammates and everyone feeling the weight of this loss. Rest easy, Cowboy,” a post on the baseball team’s Instagram said.

Further details about the incident are still being gathered. The Wharton County Youth Fair has not yet released an official statement.

The University of Wyoming, in a statement to ABC News, said, “We are deeply saddened at the news of his death and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He was a true Wyoming Cowboy.”
